Rereading my archives (what a loser, I know), I saw this comment and realized what a tremendous insult to my blog it was. You're saying my writing is so uninteresting that you paused to think about the origins of a metaphor. Fuckin' <i>ouch</i>, man.

"Barrel of monkeys" is one of those diluted-meaning cliches (redundant much) that usually gets passed over while reading, but reading this post got me imagining what a barrel of monkeys would be like, and holy shit, indeed, that would be fun! They'd all be clawing, climbing and clamoring over each other, jumping and sliding up and down inside the barrel in a frenzy, occasionally popping their heads out of the top of the barrel to make a funny face at you and shout angrily. Damn that would rule.

(OEG isn't quite that fun, but it is what the blogosphere needs).

I've used the word "otaku" seven times on my site:

"The male lead’s sexual ineptitude allows loser otaku to relate to him."

"To stay in touch with the common otaku and criticize his shitty taste"

"Here’s why loser otaku like little girls: they’re not intimidating."

"Or maybe they’re just desperate otaku willing to cling onto any modicum of sexual fulfillment they can grasp."

"The title “Sellout” refers to my earth-shaking switch from a Maddox-style HTML-only bare-bones anything-goes website to a glossy PHP/CSS/SQL/HTML otaku-interest-only blog with polls, comment boxes, tag clouds, and an RSS feed."

"The anime trivia contest was won by a team of old-school otaku who could name every Gundam model but failed on questions like: Who defeated Tenten during the Chuunin exam?"

"Yuji is a mild-mannered scrub, just like 99% of all otaku."

So, every time I use the word otaku, it's either sarcastic or downright derogatory. Thus, there's no reason why the OEG would review me, as I clearly don't associate with their kind. If you've never used the word otaku, you're probably in the same boat as me.

I approve of the OEG as well, but I actually wish they'd be less angry and more codial just so that their point would really sell home. I've been fighting the good fight to nail out a proper use of the term 'otaku' for a while now, and I'd love for people to start 'doin' it right' but no one is going to listen to you if you be a troll about it. Oh well.

For me, I don't know enough about other bloggers, but I know that they have to find me an otaku if we are to take them seriously at all.

I remember reading an interview from a new marketing exec-type from one of the US anime/manga companies a while ago. I tried to google it for a minute to no avail. Anyways, in the interview the guy mentioned the word otaku like 5 times, and this is really a tell-all sign of how that word has become something entirely different. Maybe the dictionary definition hasn't changed that much, but the context and subtext have entirely. And I'm not even comparing between the Japanese meaning and the loan word meaning.

It is as if through marketing certain anime/manga/etc things, the word has been appropriated from the fans by the commercial entities. And this statement is true oversea as well.
