  4. What the hell. Back when you announced this project I challenged you to see who could make the better looking visual novel. Now that I’ve abandoned my project and you’ve found an artist who’s better than me, it looks like you win. I think I’ll go cry in a corner while my ego slowly puts itself back together.

  5. @Sixten: I thought you were too busy for me! Choux volunteered and slowly provided me with character art over the course of four months while I twiddled my thumbs and disgraced myself by not giving the aniblogosphere any new releases of my game. I’m the failure here, not you.

If you want to do art for the game, though, I’m not at all worried about consistent style (or quality—I was planning to throw in some of my own art at some point if no one else was willing—but I know that’s not a problem with you), and I’ve only got art for three main characters and two extremely insignificant side characters.

CAN YOU DRAW GUYS, SIXTEN? I know you can. They’re girly but they’re still guys. Choux refused to draw any and, while SAKI volunteered, she’s good at things like procrastination and even if she does get shit done there’s still a LOT OF WORK!

Here’s some sampling of characters I still need art for, and there’ll be more as I add more characters later:

    main characters
    - Jason Miao (though I think SAKI wants to do him)
    - Dr. lolikitsune, a.k.a. the hobo teacher, scruffy tall guy with fox ears
    - Baka-Raptor (should look like a dude in Scar [Fullmetal Alchemist] cosplay with a wife-beater and a feathered fedora)

    minor characters
    - the school nurse from the infirmary scene
    - Os (no character design in mind)
    - Shirukii (no character design in mind)
    - homeroom teacher from the first period, haven’t yet decided on an aniblogger to base the character on but we know she’s spacey and female
    - probably more that I’m not thinking of!

    most importantly
    CCY, the protagonist.

    BUT SIXTEN

You’re fucking amazing at backgrounds. If you have time, and want to make art for this game, and enjoy backgrounds like I know you used to, DRAW ME BACKGROUNDS OH MY GOD.

It would make the game sexual.

p.s. put your ego back together quickly, dude. I’m just using what I’m getting. Make me art, I’ll use it and I’ll do my best to do it justice.

    Love you!

  6. Sixten, are you crazy? Do you KNOW how long I’ve been jealous of you? Ever since I first set eyes on that derailed by darry banner, a long, long time ago. Everything that you do looks really finished, and cute, and adorable, and don’t get me started on your backgrounds. You got that?

  7. Heeeeey Choux …

Think I could bug an angry expression off of you for CJ? You can just give me the PSD with one layer, the expression. If it’s quick and easy for you. Thanks!

It feels kind of weird for her to be smiling benignly as she knocks you out and drags you to the principal’s office.

  8. That’s weird, I’m 99.99% sure I already gave it to you before, but here you go anyway.

    Just to make sure:
    Omo:
Laugh, zany, surprised, angry, annoyed, embarrassed, smile.
    CJ:
Smile, angry, annoyed, why me, embarrassed, gentle, laugh, surprised.

Also, I thought that CJ’s teeth looked off, so here’s a remake.

  9. Hahaha oh wow indeed you did. Damn. I added all the character art to an init block in the game script last night while pretty tired, guess I missed that layer.

    So sorry for the hassle!

  15. I have no children for you to raise. But what about $2/hour? A high-budget CG that takes 30 or so hours to make would set you back $60. I could use the money for textbooks when school starts in September.

Sample redraw of the background in the image above

Just $2 per hour, and I’ll be at your command for whatever art resources you require until school starts.

My fragile ego is due mostly to the fact that while people seem to think my work is good, nobody thinks it’s worth paying for. Do you know I’ve been told things like “Your skills are still a few years short of professional” and “Really, with computers your perspective skills are less relevant these days”?

A paid commission would go a long way toward restoring my confidence.

  16. Well, I certainly don’t tell you things like those.

As for paying you… I kind of wanted to keep everything free because I don’t have a ton of disposable income. Unless one of my parents decides to miraculously pay for my housing, I’m sinking 380/month right now, ignoring food costs (which are significant, as I’m feeding both myself and my girlfriend).

That said, I would very much love to see your art in the game. Maybe we can work something out.

On the other hand, paying you 2$ an hour seems almost insulting. Your skills are clearly worth more than that. I take it that you’re offering that cheap because you don’t have any more lucrative prospects?

    I have some questions, though:

    1. How long did the redraw of the above background take?

    2. How long would it take to color it without going whatever extra miles it takes to make it as beautiful as, say, this? I ask because I’d like more than sketches, but definitely don’t need something as intense as the linked artwork (it’d be nice, but I imagine it takes a lot of time and effort).

    3. Would you be willing to release any art you make for my game in some sort of creative commons license that allows redistribution and remixing?

I’d love to have your art in my game, and I’d be willing to pay for it if need be, but I’d rather you not waste… 30 hours per background, or whatever. I’d be happier paying you a bit more per hour and using a bit less of your time.

Anyway, looking forward to your response.

  17. The picture linked above took about 10 hours from start to finish. I’ll try to color it with the same scheme as the photo you have and report on the time afterward.

  18. Wow, 10 hours? I wouldn’t have thought it a walk in the park but that’s a humongous time investment for a sample, isn’t it?

Also don’t worry about the scheme in the photo. It can be whatever colors you think complement the character art or whatever you think just looks good. The photos are stand-ins… nothing more.
