@lolikitsune: You should finish it! The ending is kinda... weird, but it was a fun show. I actually watched it so long ago on Cartoon Network when it aired, finally got around to watching it properly in Japanese a little while ago. Definitely worth a watch, although it wasn't nearly as good the second time around. I think I was even easier to please back then than I am now, if that's possible.

@Aizen: not just the mecha... also the high school romance/comedy/drama, the constant plot twists, the hilariously over-dramatic character direction, etc...

@IKnight: did they only introduce mechs in taking over Japan? I thought the fighting in Japan was special because Japan managed to make some mechs of its own (unlike the other countries)? In any case, the similarity remains. @lelangir: note the "also"—the robot arms don't make it typical. The typical comment was an aside. I can go into what makes it typical if you want, but the "omg outlaw star" thing was mainly meant as a joke (also, contrary to what my earlier comment would have you believe, I like Outlaw Star).

I’d like to see IcyStorm write up a post wherein he explicates to some degree of detail his beef with the show, though in my view grappling robot arms a la Outlaw Star isn’t quite enough to constitute “typicality” or, for that matter, “redundancy” (i.e. ROLLERSKATE MECHA OH SHI- BLUE GENDER/GEASS).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Empire first deploy Knightmares in the conquest of Japan? I thought they conquered the rest of their territory without mecha.

Admittedly, to its original audience Japan may have been the only part of the world whose conquest actually mattered.
