A Certain Whoredom Index: I Want to Be Literate

lolikitsune crafted this last love song.
It's categorized as Commentary.
It's tagged over nine thousand things, including: a certain whoredom indexmyanimelist.nettwitter. What a slut.
At least it only has 15 comments and 1,126 views.

I started this on Twitter, but it quickly became a spamfest on my end so I’m bringing it here. Awwww yeah.

So I’ve got this huge aversion to watching shitty anime that isn’t good, right? Well, there’s still a lot of good anime out there that I haven’t seen! Furthermore, some shitty anime still needs to be watched so that I can say I’m well watched (and thusly win internet arguments, which are fucking important as we in the trollsphere all know).

I’m making a list of things to check out “in the future” I.E. when I have time.

Check it out here.

I also have a list of everything I’ve seen / am watching / have dropped on MAL.

Check it out here.

Using those two resources, please suggest any and all shows you think I should watch. I don’t care about things like genre or when the show came out. I don’t care about studios or voice actresses (or voice actors). You guys are capable of using your brains (har har) so lemme know what you think it would benefit me to watch.

Note that I have yet to apply any of my own “omg I hate anime” filters to the first linked document so there are likely series listed there that I won’t actually check out. As such, feel free to recommend things already recommended. I will take the number of votes of confidence a show has into account before making decisions.

Thanks guys!

  1. It’s on your list already, but definitely check out Mushishi, Baccano!, and Nodame Cantabile.

You haven’t seen Akira? Come on, man. Grave of the Fireflies. Classic movies need to be seen! Kakurenbo is also pretty neat. Mind Game. Gundam SEED is the best post-2000 Gundam series. Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, and Perfect Blue are all excellent Satoshi Kon movies. The Animatrix is worth watching through at least once. Annnd, that’s pretty much what I’ve got after comparing our MAL lists. :3

  2. Thanks—those movies are all titles I was peripherally aware of, but probably would never get around to watching if someone didn’t shove them in my face.

  3. Akira you should definitely see before the US live action version comes out (which is probably plenty, plenty of time, but hey).

I just noticed you gave Paranoia Agent a low score on MAL — if that’s the case, you might not like Paprika or Perfect Blue much, but Tokyo Godfathers is pretty different from Kon’s usual stuff, so that’s still worth checking out.

I didn’t dislike Paranoia Agent for style or execution reasons. I disliked it because it was stupid, and that stupidity comes mostly from the last couple seconds. I have nothing against Kon in theory so I will check out those movies (also I have heard excellent things from many people about Paprika).

  5. Touch. It’s slice-of-life, but not the “nothing happens” kind.

Watch Kaiba and Mushishi. I don’t care for them, but I want to know what you think. Two hippie shows if you ask me. If you disagree about either, we can play Winner Takes All.

  6. You watched Macross F so I recommend going back and watching the original. Or start with Macross Do You Remember Love? like I did which re-tells the series and still looks gorgeous.

I second Akira, Satoshi Kon movies, Haibane Renmei and any Ghibli movies you haven’t seen. Kaiji is the best thing ever though I can never seem to accurately predict who it will appeal to. Gunbuster and Diebuster too.

You’ve actually seen more anime than I have so maybe I should be asking you for recommendations. Speaking of which you gave Arjuna a 10? I heard that Kawamori went off the deep end in that with his radical environmentalism. Now I’m intrigued.

It’s on my life for you, and I’ll watch it for you. It better be awesome.

I’m not expecting much from Kaiba, but I’ve heard intriguing things about Mushishi. It’s a must-see.

But Macross isn’t… good! Okay, okay, so maybe it’s important “culture” or whatever. I’ll et to it at some point. Sigh.

You’ve actually seen more anime than I have so maybe I should be asking you for recommendations.

Watch School Days. All of it at once (minus the OVAs, which blew). Preferably in a crowded, dark room, on a large screen. Don’t sleep for at least 36 hours in advance. Oh, and be sure you know how the show ends ahead of time. And make sure that the crowd you’re watching it with doesn’t.

I can guarantee you, that’ll be the best anime experience of your life.

Speaking of which you gave Arjuna a 10? I heard that Kawamori went off the deep end in that with his radical environmentalism. Now I’m intrigued.

I don’t know about any of that booooollshit. It is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. And not just in terms of enjoyment. It was powerful, it was well-executed, it was thoughtful, and it rocked. digiboy can probably give you a better explanation of its virtues, as he subscribes to it on a more personal level than I do.

  12. Wait, how do you know Macross isn’t good if you haven’t seen it? Macross Frontier was okay but definitely not as good as SDF.

As for trolling a bunch of people with School Days that would be pretty funny… just as long as it doesn’t end with an enraged, disillusioned audience stuffing MY head in a bag.

I think you’re the first person I’ve talked to about Arjuna that didn’t make a joke about hamburgers. I wasn’t really keen on it but I’m definitely going to check it out when I have time.

Giant robots and galactic songstresses? Boku pasu.

Set it up so that you can’t be blamed. A School Days marathon was being run over night at this convention, and I happened to be there, and no one else knew about the ending. It was sexual.

Now that you mention it, I remember at least one funny scene with hamburgers, but eh. It’s kind of like how Aria has one or two whacky scenes—it’s still awesome.

  14. Mushishi, Baccano!, Voices of a Distant Star, Princess Tutu, Haibane Renmei, Kino’s Journey

I personally can’t vouch for the greatness of Haibane Renmei, but going with how everyone seems to love it, it’s gotta be worth something. Princess Tutu is also apparently good but I never got to finish it :(
