Lelouch > Light (srsly)

Yagotme Light tried to reform the world with a power not granted to most people. Lelouch LAMPISANENVIRONMENT tried to reform the world with a power not granted to most people. Light ended up in a pool of his own blood. Lelouch ended up in a pool of his own blood. If we examine only the starting and ending points, they’re about the same.

For as long as I’ve been watching Code Geass, the similarities between its protagonist and that of Death Note have been pretty evident. The plotting, the belief in their own mental superiority, the JUST AS PLANNED, the grand plans for ascension… and of course, the maniacal laughter. With Episode 25 of Code Geass R2, we finally have a difference to separate the two: Lelouch’s pool of blood is also a pool of victory. Light failed and Lelouch succeeded.

This final episode of Code Geass I feel validates the entire second season.

Sure, a lot of it didn’t make sense. There was lots of the usual Sunrise bullshit. But a lot of the wtf-ish moments we experienced in the last few episodes make sense now. We now know the details of Lelouch’s plan for world domination. We now know why he acted as he did. We now see the true purpose of Suzaku’s curse.

Sunrise finishes the series with what it knows best: impaling a main character with a sword.

And all the characters we care about get their happy endings (a better world!).

I have a few qualms, still, though I no longer doubt that Code Geass is simply a good show.

1. Lelouch is wrong. Suzaku can’t become an hero.

2. Cornelia and Nina are still alive and there was nothing about reforming their characters. They’re both evil, racist killers, and need to pay for their deeds of injustice.

3. Will Suzaku ~disappear into the Summer~ ? ’cause I still don’t like him too much.

4. Why does Nunnally become Empress? Makes no sense. Lelouch changed some laws in Britannia, and he ordered the royal family to recognize him, but now that he’s gone that should all change. Odysseus? The elder sisters? I don’t know, but Nunnally certainly is _not_ next in line.

5. Which brings me to the next problem. People are still under the effects of the geass, as far as we can tell. Lelouch didn’t order Jeremiah to un-geass everyone because Schneizel is now Suzaku’s bitch.

6. ZERO! ZERO! ZERO! The people like Zero too much. Lelouch’s plans may be shown to be working, but here’s what I think: in addition to erasing the people’s hatred, he increased their dependence upon Zero. All the more reason for Suzaku to disappear. You’re not going to recreate a healthy world where everyone is in love with what is, as Diethard so famously explained, a symbol.

7. Sayoko and Jeremiah :( :(

8. Lloyd and Kannon :( :(

9. Lloyd, period. What happened to him? He really lost his spirit in the last couple episodes. He’s like a husk of what he used to be. No more grandiose/psycho CONGRATULATIONS~~~~!! It are sadface worthy Y_Y

10. Lelouch’s methods are not permanent and he did not weed out evil.

This is really the biggest problem. Yes, he made the world better. But a peaceful, united world is just begging for a new dictator to arise. I guess Suzaku’s the stopgap until the world is settled into being better for everyone? (Education can’t be the first priority of rebuilding countries given that their citizens are starving and poor [war drains economies like nothing else], and until education can be invested heavily in there will always be evil-minded people.) In this case Suzaku will stain his hands more and bear even more burdens.

What?

It’s not like I feel sorry for him, or anything.

And now, one last problem… C.C.? Is this a resolution? Are you happy, or are you off to contract a new fuckbuddy and then have him kill you? Seriously, what’s your deal? You’ve lost everything you could possibly have decided to live for. Er, Lelouch. There was only one thing.

Well, these are al the ramblings of a tired mind. Now I’m off to finish Nogizaka Haruka so that I can write a more coherent post about it and why Mike is wrong about its supposed greatness.

P.S. if I had the geass, and wanted to make the world better, I’d become a rock star or actor or something. I’d go to a venue and geass everyone with the command, “live in a way that doesn’t hurt those around you.” Fuck yeah painless.

  8. I hate to break it to you guys, but the Sunrise that wrote Code Geass doesn’t write in clever hints to let the audience figure things out on their own. They beat us over the head with the facts senselessly until we accept even the logic-defying to be true. So “clues” to Lulu’s survival they ain’t.

Lulouch is a hero, a martyr. With a death scene far surpassing Euphie’s, Shirley’s, and Rolo’s, he gave up the world to save it, and his death redeems his legacy in the eyes of those who know: us, the audience.

  10. I hate to break it to you guys, but Sunrise threw in lots of possible hints there (except for the Orange-kun one), yet it’s still alright to dismiss them all (due to sheer ignorance, stubbornness or private issues) and believe that Lelouch has actually died. I know it’s a nice end when the watchers are given such option.

So do I prefer him dead or alive? Well the other cast members are having their own super happy endings so I figure why not let Lelouch have his own : after Geassing the whole world into believing he’s dead, Lelouch is now enjoying the rest of his eternal life with C.C. in Europe :).
‚Äúlive in a way that doesn‚Äôt hurt those around you." —> duh. why don’t ya tell them to divide by negative zero instead? Competition = evolution. You can’t get a job without making a guy lose his. Even Alicia hurt Akira, in some ways… There’s an old saying where I live, “you can’t live and please everybody”. I don’t know about Akari, but you get the gist.

  11. You can compete against other things than those around you, frankeinstein. You can compete against yourself, always struggling to be better. Also, if you get a job that someone else doesn’t get, they should just get a different one. And if everyone is living to please those around them, the decision is fair and the person who didn’t get the job doesn’t feel bad about not getting the job.

Maybe you can’t live and please everybody in our world as it is because too many people are too selfish. We’re talking about a hypothetical, here… if everyone were (for supernatural reasons) suddenly transformed into considerate people, the world would be changed for the better.

  12. Just to address issue 2, there was a scene where after Nina helped Lelouch he told her she was a good person. Yeah… I didn’t buy it either, but they tried. As for Cornelia she barely did anything in R2 except look hot and it’s been a long time since I watched R1, but I don’t remember her being any worse than any of the other Britannians. She was just stronger with more power. Lelouch needed a good enemy like that. I’m sorry that her character became pointless and the final boss ended up being the apathetic Schneizel.

Oh, and I think C.C. was happy because Lelouch finally achieved his goal – making the world a better place. And she finally achieved hers – she can die now that she lost the code. Which was all thanks to Lelouch, in a way.

The internet has totally ruined this ending for me with their insistence that Lelouch lives. I can’t watch it without wanting to bang my head on my desk.

  13. As you say, Cornelia was not worse than any of the other Britannians (well, with the possible exception of Euphemia, and a few civilians here and there), but that’s really fucking bad. The entire country was evil. Racist, brutal, etc. Bad form.

When did C2 lose her code?

  14. To be fair, Lloyd and Cecile-san were standing next to each other in the Ougi/Viletta wedding picture, so I choose to believe they may be together. Then again, Milly was standing right there too, so maybe Lloyd got the harem going. >:)

Also: Since we didn’t see Sayoko at all in the ending shots, I’m saying she is Orange’s Waifu anyway. Anya is either Jeremiah’s long lost sister, Sayoko and Jeremiah’s adopted daughter, or Jeremiah’s long lost Sister.

  15. Heh well yeah, that’s true about Cornelia. But then Lelouch wasn’t exactly innocent either. He definitely killed a lot more people then he really needed to.

Nevermind about C.C. losing her code. For a second there I thought she’d permanently lost it after the whole thing with Charles.

  16. Lelouch killed more than he needed to‚Äîand he paid the price. Him being alive would invalidate that, just as Cornelia not being punished/reformed invalidates her very essence. Somewhere in the show, there should be some message contrary to that portrayed at the end of it all when she charges out of hiding to rescue the hostages: Cornelia is NOT glorious, she is NOT righteous, she is a bigoted jingoistic racist bitch who needs to make up for her crimes (by the way randomly razing Elevens’ ghettoes doesn’t make her a better leader).

    @jobrill – :( KANNON x LLOYD 4EVAHHHH

  17. Oh wait, KANNON x Lloyd? But what about Schneizel? :(

Then again, if Lloyd’s going for the Harem, he could add Kannon in to. So it’s all good.
