I can tell you haven’t lived in a police state like Russia. A Russian can forget his pants, but he will never forget passport. Without passport, the first document check will send him into a concentration camp of MVD or dungeons of FSB, depending which agency catches him. He’ll be lucky to get out alive and with a few teeth remaining.

And ouch, that sounds scary. Update: I just recovered my passport. The time lost driving back and forth was a bitch but the actual procedures were ridiculously easy. Like, anyone else would have been able to take my passport if they’d known I’d left it.
