2.5 minutes of Lucky Star ep01 – Subtitle: you fucking suck

So, I beat Hinano. She went down to watching a whole seven minutes of this show; I successfully jacked out at two and a half. The moment Blue-tan started licking that… thing… I knew I wouldn’t be able to do this. Tell me I’m not win otaku, as tj han has, if you will, but if win otaku means being pleased by shit like this count me out.

This is so bad… it’s so bad, I won’t even blog it. It’s… Haruhi-level bad.

What’s so bad about it, you ask?

And what right do I have to talk, having only seen two and half minutes of a single episode of a newly started show?

Oh, we’ve seen this show before. We’ve all seen it before. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is. Whoredom at its finest. We’ve seen it in Naruto; the single franchise that makes the most money with the least effort. We’ve seen it in Gonzo films that make relatively little money with a lot of effort, but please a lot of fans with “zomfg suteki~” animation. Before Lucky Star, there was this dancing anime.

And now, there’s this dancing anime.

And it’s multiplying.

As you all may or may not know, I’ve long hated the concept of “moe.” It objectifies a set of qualities (given, this set includes every single quality there is, according to Dr. Japes) and turns appreciation into a pretty damn formulaic thing. Instead of enjoying a character for the character as a character, “moe” aspects, traits, behavioral patterns, etc. take the foreground and become reason for a character’s acceptance. Instead of being intrigued by Tsukimiya Ayu’s lack of background, in watching Kanon, fans trouble themselves with “she’s so cute!”

And why’s she cute? Because she says “uguu.” And because she wears that coat, and those mittens, and that backpack, and acts like the little loli bitch she is. But who is she? Does anyone think to wonder?

Don’t you want to know who this girl is? Oh, we find out, after twenty-four episodes, eighteen of which were spent on other characters. There’s no development to Ayu’s character. Yuuichi is frighteningly detached from concern regarding this little girl who claims to know him… and who doesn’t have a family? Or a home? Or a school? Or any of the things she claims she has? All of a sudden, twenty episodes in, he kisses her… but we, the viewers, what motivation do we have for wanting the protagonist to kiss Ayu? Who is Ayu?

Some girl who says “uguu.” She likes taiyaki and dislikes scary things, including the dark.

/me snaps fingers

That’s not a character, and this degeneration of character development in favor of pandering to fetishes/aesthetics is the main reason I’m opposed to the concept of “moe.” “Moe” is whoredom, plain and simple. Yuki’s silence. Haruhi’s psycho bitchiness. Mikuru’s “lolimoe” helplessness. Tsuruya’s nyoro~n. Yes, even Itsuki’s homosexuality. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu’s saving grace has always been, in my opinion, Kyon’s narration, and that may well be because he has a solid character. Of course, it’s entirely possible that the author of the novels merely made him as bland and dry as possible in order to help readers connect to him. Maybe there isn’t anything, even to him.

So why do I rant against “moe” so vehemently?

Lucky Star is, in a word, “moe.” You only need about 4 seconds of the obnoxious OP to figure that out. Take a look at these responses to bj0rn’s post about the OP:

  • Impz says: MOE ATTACK!!!!!! i am dying, i am dying and I want my lucky star now!!!! moeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~
  • bakavic says: I just died. [...] The dancing is just too addictive…
  • Aesir says: holy.. tat was.. just too awesome for words @@

And this explosion occurring as a result of Lucky Star’s entrance isn’t same old, same old. Look how willing these ghouls are; look how eagerly they embrace something knowing the meaning of “moe” and that they’re under some twisted genjutsu. The sos-dan.com site, formed some time last year in response to previous whore-show Haruhi, is scuttling with little bugs of people, the sad remains of people once unaffected by this “moe.” What was once a stupid book about some alien-loving girl has escalated to the level of epic reeducation.

I repeat, it’s multiplying.

I had respect for Kyoto Animation. I respected them for making AIR, the one show I’ve seen with the most compelling atmosphere. I respected them for making Fumoffu, the one show that’s made me laugh the most. I could deal with them making Haruhi; it’s business, after all. I cried more for the Haruhi fans than for myself when they made Kanon—what harm could it do to me? But this… this “Lucky Star” or what have you…

I quote Omni on the OP sequence, “It makes me think that they’re intentionally trying to create another Hare Hare Yukai style sensation.

You think right, Omni.

They’ve descended from grace and are now fervently recycling everything of theirs that ever worked. Haruhi was passable and Kanon was a step back in the right direction. Lucky Star?

Kyoto Animation, you are whores.

You are whores and your show fucking sucks.

it is moist & delicious meta

and it's not even a lie!

  1. And that is why lolikit needs a good licking.
    *licks lolikit :3

  2. Ah, excellent use uncalled for ad hominem attacks and other bits of unprofessionalism that not only makes you look bad but all the other anime bloggers look bad. If you are having this violent of a reaction to a single episode, then you probably have issues that KyoAni can’t fix. You are expecting for being unable to stomach more than 3 minutes of a show, a pat on the back? Well time for the devil’s advocate treatment.

For your complaining about the ‘whoring’ that Kyoani is doing. Are you actually SURPRISED by this? Ever since they’ve had a decent amount of shows done, has always slipped in subtle references to other shows they’ve done, Haruhi references Full Metal Panic, Kanon references both Air and Haruhi, is it any surprise that they would reference Haruhi in Lucky Star? Personally I was expecting a dance sequence in the OP, so this isn’t a big deal to me.

Before anyone attacks me for being a Kyoani whore, for full disclosure I didn’t really like this episode either, then again the only show of Kyoani’s whose first episode I DID LIKE was Full Metal Panic: Second Raid. This is the way it has pretty much has been, people whine about the first episode, say that Kyoani was wrong for bothering to do the show, and then said people eventually end up eating crow. As with Haruhi, as with Kanon, the same will probably be true with Lucky Star.

P.S. For someone that is against Kyoani’s whoring you sure have an annoying number of a Kyoani character in your background.

  3. >>Are you actually SURPRISED by this?
    Not at all :)

    >>Personally I was expecting a dance sequence in the OP
    So was I :)

    >>Before anyone attacks me for being a Kyoani whore
    So am I.

    Bitch.

  4. So I heard you like mudkips.

  5. mikemil828 needs two scoops of loliyuri ice cream, I bet~!

Everything would be all better if we just had panties.

  6. Ya don’t liek him, VIOLENTLY LICK HIM.

It works, and we can all jack off to it later.

  7. Is this a dancing animu?

  8. I envy you for having the sense to bail when you did, I sat through the entire thing T_T

  10. >>Kanon references both Air and Haruhi

kanon doesn’t reference haruhi at all.

  11. /me sighs.
2.5 minutes does not a 24 episode show make. :3

  12. >>2.5 minutes does not a 24 episode show make. :3
No, I think the point is that those 2.5 minutes broke the show for me.

  13. It’s too soon! TOO SOON! ;_;

  15. >>kanon doesn’t reference haruhi at all.

Yuuichi makes his introductory speech to the class in the second episode, and then sits down. This is dialogue taken directly from a.f.k.’s sub:

Kaori: Wasn’t expecting such an ordinary introduction.
Yuuichi: If there’s such a thing as an unordinary introduction, I’d love to see it.

Yuuichi’s voice actor is Tomokazu Sugita, who just so happens to be Kyon’s voice actor from Haruhi.

Haruhi has one of the the most ‘unordinary’ introductions imaginable (coincidentally, in the second episode of that show).

    That is the reference.

  16. >>That is the reference.

Lol, there are actually a ton. I just didn’t want to hurt the guy’s feelings.

  17. >>Lol, there are actually a ton. I just didn’t want to hurt the guy’s feelings.

Meh. I’m only partway through the series, so while I’ve seen several, I figured that I would go with one of the more obvious ones. Poor word choice on my behalf.

  18. I agree with you 150% on everything you’ve said about the damage that Moe in lieu of plot and true character development has been causing. However I don’t agree that is multiplying. We’ve been seeing less and less of series that rely soley on the Moe to see them through the day and now Mecha and other types of series are making a resurgence. The Hegemony of Moe is over Lolikit look around at all the show coming out in 2007 where Moe is either not existant or taking a backseat to real character development and plot progression. It’s no longer omnipresent, just present and the hostile reaction to this show, which is lacking in clear plot progression I think is proof of the Moe aesthetic falling out of favour. That said I think this is predominantly about the 4Koma style comedy and the Moe second. I don’t think I’ll have as much trouble as you watching it.

  23. omg si teh winnage u r teh sexay sexay omg realli?

  24. A prompt example of purposely going against mainstream crowd, just to stick out as unique.

And in response to the “references”, I say LOL. Which story was ever original anyway? Which character in any anime is TOTALLY unique, or even largely unique? Its like saying “OMFG TJHAN YOU SUCK BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT UNIQUE, YOU TRIED TO COPY A TROLL. PHAIL”.

As I mentioned before on another blog, I’d like to watch five episodes before taking a side. In addition, I like to post on blogs like these, so that in case the anime turns out to be good, I can safely point to the post, and my comment, then turn to the person and remark, “See how hypocritical people are?”

In any case, even if you dislike it all the way, it does not take away the fact that you’re not viewing things objectively. I seriously hope that, if you do get a girlfriend next time, she won’t be classified as “moe”, because we’ll laugh our asses off (which leads me to the para above again).

  25. I don’t care about the moe appeal to this show. The show is 4-koma humor that’s is the same of Azumanga Daioh or Hidamari Sketch. Besides, the OP is quite funny, not full with moe appeal!

I can agree about KyonAni being maybe whoring to appeal a certain public and Full Metal Panic Fumoffu/Air was special. But in the end it seems that every animation studio have some weaknesses for example Gainax. They made great anime with Evangelion, Kare Kano and FLCL. Butin the recent years they have made mostly shows with lots fanservice (He is my master, Mahoromatic) and soon shall Gainax “Remake” the Evangelion with some movies. That is kinda sad. Anyhow, i will watch this series because this could be a new Azumanga Daioh.

  26. I wonder if you’re doing this because:

    a) You laugh at people that reply to your posts (a troll, yes),
    b) You hate mainstream anime,
    c) You hate mainstream studios,
    d) All of the above,
    e) You really, really don’t like the series. Which, at this point, makes you a troll.
    f) !!!!!!!!
    g) Lose.

I don’t see the mo√© factor in this series, but only I’ve seen the OP.

    Well wtf, good luck.

  27. is it just me ..or ur background shows Tsuruya-chan?…

    anyways..

Haha! I have to agree with you … just because of the success of their past series .. it doesnt mean that EVERYONE in the whole world has been taken by their spell … haha Sure I loved Haruhi sure I loved AIR … I kinda like Kanon too …

but if they continue to just mimic those anime series and won’t make something original .. I might hate kyoto animation for good.

but yeah .. I guess everyone was expecting a dance in the OP …

I’ll bet my 500 something dollars I saved that when a LUCKY STAR DVD is released there will be a Full Dance OP …

    I bet .. I beeet

  28. trollikitsune: So I heard you don’t buy sausage.

  29. @ Mitsuki: I’m never going to back down because I’m not giving the series a second chance; whether it grows on others or not doesn’t affect my interpretation of the show’s quality. Childish viewpoint? In theory. But really, I’m just saving my dinner. I’m sorry you take offense at posts like these, and I’m even more sorry that you comment on them. Honestly, you’re wasting your time, and all you’re doing is boosting my ego through the comment count.

@ Nobunaga: your reasons for watching it seem to be the same as the reasons for which I tried it. The difference would be that I refuse to be desensitized to whoredom. To each his own, I suppose.

    @ Stahn:
    a) I laugh at everyone who replies to my posts, including myself.
    b) I hate anime.
    c) I happen to like Kyoto Animation; AIR is my second favorite TV show.
    d) You’re wrong.
    e) I really, really couldn’t stand the show, hence my 2.5 minute endurance.
    f) !!!!!!!!
    g) Win.

@ King~Philip: yes, my site background is indeed a tile of Churuya.

@ sagematt: but if I buy sausage, L will know that I’m Kira!

  30. I swore I wasn’t getting involved in all of this crap again, but I’d like to highlight this argument posted here at the very maximum of involvement because it irks me.

    e) You really, really don’t like the series. Which, at this point, makes you a troll.

This argument is really really poor. So because he doesn’t like the show he’s a troll, ON HIS OWN BLOG?! That’s pretty bullshit fanboyism right there. By making this argument the person is only giving fuel to lolikitsune’s claim that whoredom is going on with Kyoto Animation and their fans, it’s a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

I really really didn’t like this show called Sokou No Strain and a lot of people did. Does that mean I’m a troll in the cases where I’ve highlighted the faults of that series.

  31. The whole hating Haruhi thing that you’ve been spouting zealously seems like a gimmick to attract attention (or at least create some kind of drama to amuse yourself with).

  32. Fuck ‘Moe Kyoto Animation’.

  33. You’re my hero.

  34. You’re an hero.

  35. LOL! I didn’t take offense, seriously. I just found the extreme bias supremely funny, and just had to point it out. You see, I love to sit on the fence, and point out the spittle-flying, hard hitting madness of fanboys, trolls (whatever lol), anti-fanboys, and etc.

I love your statement on how the increasing number of comments serve to increase the size of your ePENIS, because, it just proves my point that you’re just ranting to attract attention. Which you’ve succeeded, in a way.

Enjoy your 1 post of fame (infamity) dude.

  36. Thanks for coming back and making me feel loved.

Nice to see something other than KyoAni fandom on the intertron.

  39. Admit it, you buy sausage, and you lub it!

  47. Amazing.
You watched… Less than three minutes of this one out of twenty-four episodes…
And you declared it a bad anime leeching ideas off other KyoAni series…
And making moolah from candyeye moeness.

    I’ll admit…
The series… The entire overall script…
    Not that great.
But I think the OP’s pretty okay.
And the ENDs are pretty amusing.
And the original concept is quite interesting.
Then again, I probably have not spent as many hours watching anime as you…
And my exploration into this “anime society” has not been as far as yours…

    Moe =/= whoredom, IMO.
    To me, turnons =/= whoredom.
But if liking moe equals to whoredom in your eyes…
Call two-thirds of the entire population of those who has ever had any relation to watching anime and manga whores.
And yeah, I’m one of them.

    My point?
    Same as you.
I have no point worth discussing.
    Yet I’m ranting anyway…
    And about what?
    I seriously have no idea.

  48. I was not about to to post again…
But I forgot something very important…

As I’m sure you realized already..
Moeness IS the point of this entire… “Shit” crap.
It’s making fun of it, in a way…
    And feeding those…those…OTAKU… Some ENTERTAINMENT.

Now why did I put those words in CAPS?
    No reason, really.
Don’t think too much about these comments.
What I say is just… What I say. No hidden meaning.
Like you, all I do is rant about my stand.

BTW, your BG looks like a jungle or something with…SHROOMS.
